5 Great Trails for Spring Hiking
Everything’s coming alive in the forests, lakes and mountains. It’s a great time to explore the trails, while the days are sunny but not too hot. The higher elevations may still have snow, however there are many local hikes where winter has melted away. Lace up your boots and discover these great spring hikes:
- Copple Crown and East Peak – This 5.6 mile hike begins with a gentle but steady climb to the summit of Copple Crown Mountain. The vista and additional clifftop outlook, called East Peak, have great views of Lake Winnipesaukee. Keep an eye out for moose tracks while traversing the many forest streams.
- Mt. Major via Boulder Loop and Brook Trails – This 4 mile hike up to Mount Major has amazing views of Lake Winnipesaukee. A clear, pretty brook will be your companion on the descent through moosewood and birch trees. Keep an eye out for the first wildflowers of spring, such as purple and white violets.
- Mount Morgan and Mount Percival Loop – This diverse hike has summit views, ledges and even a cave to explore. The 5.3 mile loop has great mountain and lake views from the Mount Morgan and Mount Percival summits. Additionally, a series of ladders leads to a boulder cave.
- West Rattlesnake Mountain – This easy hike on the Old Bridle Path and Ridge Trail leads to the summit of West Rattlesnake Mountain. The pink granite outcrops offer fantastic views of Squam Lake and its many islands. However, the rare plants along this hike are worth attention as well. The forest includes red oak, red pine and maples, as well as wild columbine, false foxglove, and wood lilies.
- Red Hill Loop Trail – This 3.5 mile hike offers an unique summit, reached by climbing a fire tower to a viewing platform. Here hikers will enjoy a 360-degree view overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake, the Sandwich and the Ossipee mountains. Not to mention the resident moose, bear, deer, woodcock, songbirds, and ruffed grouse.
After a day exploring forests and climbing summits, relax by the fire at our cozy inn. Then drift off to sleep in the comfortable, classic rooms.
